The Turning Point Center of Rutland is excited that Jillian Fisher is working to combat the stigma associated with addiction and she will be joining us at our Recovery Walk on September 21st as we all work together to Stop Out Stigma!!
Jillian Fisher, Miss Vermont 2019, is a senior at the University of Vermont studying Animal Science with a concentration in pre-veterinary medicine. As Miss Vermont, she has chosen "Fighting Addiction" as her social impact initiative for the Miss America Organization. With family members who have battled addiction, she has seen first hand the struggles that individuals with addiction face. As Miss Vermont, she aims to help reduce the stigma that is associated with addiction in order to lessen the burden that so many still face today. She has begun to combat this by creating a website, "The Stigma Stops Here", where she invites people to pledge to change the language they use when speaking of people with addiction and asks them to stop using hurtful words such as "junkie" or "addict".
